The arguments glen from the few words and image of a man suits has many presumptions it is clear that this icon/image/idea had come from a hetero normative society it may be saying both lingerie and suits are sexy however they may be sexy in different ways

I’m just going to first apologize if I in any way misunderstood you, your sentence structure isn’t the easiest to follow.

That being said, what the text on the image was doing was making an analogy. It was written in the structure of an analogy (this is to this as that is to that). Analogies are used to directly compare two things. This means that the suits and the lingerie were being directly compared, and I have an issue with that for the reasons I explained in the post itself.

I also already said that I agree that both things are attractive, I just don’t think they should be compared the way they’re being compared in the image.

Why do you have to read in to everything like that? Not everything on tumblr is aimed at degrading feminism.

I never said it was against feminism. I said it was an inaccurate analogy that was misrepresenting both binary genders and was unfair to everyone involved
I actually originally saw this post on my Facebook newsfeed by a close friend, which is when I initially took issue with it. I only chose to reblog it on Tumblr because a friend of mine and I were talking about it, and she had someone she wanted me to explain my issue to. So I did.
Not “reading into things” like this isn’t something I’m okay with. Not questioning society and its standards is a great way to continue bias, stereotypes, oppression, and abuse. I like to question authority :D

Also, disclaimer! I may accidentally use the words MAN and WOMAN as synonyms for BIOLOGICALLY MALE-BODIED and BIOLOGICALLY FEMALE-BODIED. Please forgive me—I do understand that this is not the case, and even that there are many people who fall between/outside this binary, but I am running on lack of sleep, and so I’m trying to keep my wording simple so I don’t confuse myself.

So, the first time I saw this post a couple months ago, I kind of scanned the sentiment, agreed, and scrolled past—and then did the digital equivalent of a double take, re-read the text, and got so annoyed with it, I moved on.

(I do that a lot—I get so suddenly frustrated with things that bother me that I just shoo them away and shut my eyes. Kind of a LALALA I DON’T HEAR YOU kind of thing.)

So, here are the things that bother be about this.

It’s assuming that all women are attracted to people who tend to wear suits (primarily male-bodied)
It’s assuming that all males are attracted to people who tend to wear lingerie (primarily female-bodied)
It’s assuming that all men are attracted to lingerie
It’s assuming that all women are attracted to suits

But perhaps the most bothersome thing to me is this:

It’s setting unfair standards on both genders and sexes by falsely equating two things that are not even remotely the same.

What I mean by that is this: A suit is something that is very proper and considered very socially acceptable or socially approved. A man (or any person, really) walking around in a suit is not inherently sexual, even though many people may be attracted to that style. Men wear suits to work, and weddings, and important events.

Lingerie, however, is most often a blatant display of a biologically female body. A female-bodied person could not wear only lingerie to any of the places a male-bodied person could wear “only” a suit.

Also, this man : suit :: woman : lingerie analogy (if you don’ know what those colons mean, Google them, k?) is problematic because of the associations made with each thing. See a man in a suit and the words that come to mind are “classy, smart, put together, successful,” ect., while a woman in lingerie provokes thoughts closer to “sexy, hot, attractive,” or even “slutty.”

By saying the attraction of men in suits is equal to the attraction of women in lingerie, what’s being said is that men are valued for their success and intelligence, while women are measured by their physical appearance and sexual willingness/ability.

[Another note: I find men in suits very attractive. I also find women in lingerie attractive. I just think that a more accurate analogy would be men : suits :: women : nice dresses, or men : *insert preferred underwear style* :: women : lingerie. In those areas, male & female bodies are placed on equal footing.]
